My Weekly Drash (a mini D'var Torah) - Pesach
Posted by Daniel M. Kimmel on April 24, 2008 | Tags: Pesach
This Shabbat is the seventh day of Pesach, which means we pause in the cycle of Torah readings and get a rerun from several weeks ago, reading part of Parshah B’Shallach. The reason is obvious: it tells of the Exodus, the parting of the sea, and then Moses leading the Israelites in the Song at the Sea. There are many stories in the Torah, but three of them are of such importance we recapitulate in our services every day. Look closely at our siddur, and you’ll see references to the creation, to our liberation, and to the giving of the Law. These are three pivotal moments in our history, and we focus on them in our prayers and in our studies. Pesach focuses on our release from bondage, but we’ve already start counting the Omer, culminating in seven weeks with the celebration of Shavuot, a celebration of our receiving the Torah. As the “People of the Book,” it’s nice to know that our books do, indeed, make sense.
