My Weekly Drash (a mini D'var Torah) - Noach
Posted by Daniel M. Kimmel on October 11, 2007 | Tags: Noach
It's one of those Bible stories we don't tell the kids. In Parshah
Noach, Noah gets drunk and gets naked, and is discovered by his son
Ham, who runs out to tell his brothers Shem and Japheth. For this he and his descendents are cursed. What did he do wrong? Instead of
coming to his father's aid, he rushed to share the news of his
father's shame with his siblings. Even if candor among family
members is deemed a good thing, Ham's priorities are wrong. Instead
of showing love and respect for his father, he seems more interested in having a juicy story to share, one that puts his father in a bad light. Perhaps the real lesson is a variation on Hillel's version of the Golden Rule: treat your parents as you would want your children to treat you.
