My Weekly Drash (a mini D'var Torah) -- Rosh Hashonah 5770

This year we will hear the Shofar less often than usual. Since the first day of Rosh Hashonah falls on Shabbat, the Shofar blowing - and Tashlich - are both pushed backed to Sunday. It's part of the magic and confusion of the Jewish calendar where holidays are "early" or "late" on the civic calendar, and may be permitted to fall on Shabbat - or not - on the Hebrew one. What we'll notice in the Machzor on Saturday are the additions for Shabbat, as well as the omission of the Shofar service and Avinu Malkeinu. Sunday will seem more like a "normal" Rosh Hashonah. For those "three day a year" Jews, who show up just on the High Holy Days because they're so important, it ought to be a signal that the observance of Shabbat takes even greater precedence. There are various ways our holidays and rituals accommodate or adapt to their falling on Shabbat. It's a great mitzvah to attend services this weekend for Rosh Hashonah. It will be a great mitzvah to come to Shabbat services next week as well.
