My Weekly Drash (a mini D'var Torah) - Emor (2)

Woody Allen had a routine in which he was hired by a firm to be their token Jew. He worked very hard at it, writing his memos from right to left but he was eventually fired. Why? He took off too many Jewish holidays. This week's Parshah Emor has another iteration of our calendar. God tells Moses, "These are My fixed times, the fixed times of the Lord, which you shall proclaim as sacred occasions." (Lev. 23:2) For the newly freed Israelites getting to observe their own holy days was a mark of freedom. As we go through the annual calendar, don't think of these observances as burdens but as the opportunity to live freely as Jews, as our ancestor so often could not.
